Krabi Town Markets

As a result of its location at the mouth of the river, the capital of Krabi, Krabi Town, is the main shopping destination popular among locals and tourists alike.

While Krabi Town has no beaches to speak of, it is well-known for its many markets offering a wider range of goods at lower prices than neighboring beach towns, such as Ao Nang.

There are three main types of markets in Krabi: local markets, offering a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, snacks and street foods; night markets, comprised of mostly street food stalls; and walking street markets, which are the most popular among tourists, selling a little bit of everything, from local food to handicrafts and other souvenirs.

Krabi Town is home to a large number of these markets, frequented by locals all throughout the week.

Maharaj Market is a huge local indoor market known as the ‘Morning Market’ that takes place every day early in the morning. This market is immensely popular among locals and an important source for the majority of chefs, hotels, and restaurants in the Krabi area. It’s full of exotic dried goods, colorful fruits and vegetables, meats, tropical fish, spices, and ready-to-eat Thai foods. Maharaj Market is a busy and lively market that begins as early as 4:00 am and finally winds down around noon.

For those of us who aren’t early risers {especially on vacation}, the Downtown Fresh Market located in the heart of Krabi Town is open daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and is similar to the Maharaj Market, just slightly smaller. Still wildly popular among locals, the Downtown Fresh Market is a local market selling a wide variety of Thai street food, meats, fresh produce, spices, and flowers with all of the exotic sights and smells you would expect from a typical Asian wet market.

After a long day of exploring the surrounding area, Ryan and I stopped in for a visit at the Downtown Fresh Market to grab some lunch and see what else we could find at this local Thai market.

In addition to the Krabi Town Local Markets, the Krabi Town Walking Market is another popular market held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. At this night market, you can get a fascinating glimpse into the southern Thai culture by sampling local foods, shopping for goods made by local artisans, and catching a traditional Thai music show performed by local school children.

If you are a fan of Thai cuisine, and/or looking to get your hands on some authentic homemade Thai souvenirs, you should definitely check out the many popular markets scattered throughout Krabi Town.
