Nagasaki Lantern Festival

Located in Nagasaki, Japan, the Nagasaki Lantern Festival is an annual event celebrating the Chinese New Year. This festival takes place over the first 15 days of the Chinese new year, and similar to the Lantern Festival in China, over 15,000 Chinese lanterns richly paint Nagasaki’s Shinchi Chinatown, Hama-ichi, and Kankodori Arcade, as well as other parts of the city.

Along with a display of lanterns, the festival includes fireworks, Chinese acrobatics, lion dances, dragon dances, kokyu performances, an Emperor’s parade, a Mazu {goddess} procession, a ‘campaign lady’ beauty contest. During the Chinese New Year, the town of Nagasaki is adorn with the color of China, and with a wide array of cultural events and delicious food, the Nagasaki Lantern Festival is one that cannot be missed!
